The right application photo in your CV

No. Companies are not allowed to require a photo. An application without a picture is complete. In some countries and international companies, a photoless CV is even common.

Approximately 4.5 × 6 cm or a similar portrait format is common. The image is usually at the top next to the contact details or on an optional cover page. Sufficient resolution and a smooth crop are important.

Orient yourself to the industry and position. Choose well-groomed clothing, a neutral background, soft lighting and a natural, friendly facial expression.

Read the employer’s instructions before deciding whether an image belongs in the application. If a photograph is specifically requested, use a recent, clear image and check the crop in the exported file. Keep your name and contact information as selectable text rather than placing them inside the image. If no photograph is needed, use the available space for evidence of your skills. A separate portfolio or casting submission may have different requirements; follow the instructions for that submission rather than assuming one layout fits every role.

For applications across different English-speaking markets, follow the terminology used in the vacancy. Choose one spelling convention, write dates unambiguously and include the international dialling code when applying abroad. Keep a separate final copy for each employer so country-specific changes do not overwrite another application.
